Ready to Get Involved On Campus

Want to be a leader, become a friend and promote service? Get involved in Alpha Phi Omega!

Alpha Phi Omega is a National Service Fraternity — college students gathered
together in an organization based on fraternalism and founded on the principles
of the Boy Scouts of America. Its purpose is to develop leadership, promote
friendship and provide service to humanity.

Pledges represent our hope for the future. Our principles of Leadership,
Friendship, and Service. They provide a strong base on which to build a
successful standard of conduct. It is our hope that you will embrace them, live
by them, and share them with others. We wish you great success a you embark upon
a lifetime of service in Alpha Phi Omega.

Any student duly enrolled on the campus where a chapter exists, who joins
with the chapter’s members in their service projects, accepts the principles of
Scouting on which the Fraternity’s ideals are based, and meets the standards of
the chapter. Look here to find a chapter on your campus today!

The Alpha Phi
Omega National Office is excited to announce the hire of a new field
representative, Brother Meagan Savage, 2007 initiate of Omega Chapter at Drake
University in Des Moines, Iowa. Meagan will begin her work as a field rep this
summer. The Field Rep position is a year-long commitment that can be renewed
for a second year. Let’s take this opportunity to get to know just a bit more
about her.

<p">Degree(s): Bachelor’s degree in journalism and
English, double major
<p">What
are your hobbies or extracurricular activities? Alpha Phi Omega, community
service, blogging, social networking, writing and spending time outside
<p">
<p">

What awards have you
received through APO and outside of APO? Drake University Service Award, Resident Assistant of the
Month, Chapter Distinguished Service Key, Omega Chapter Leadership Award, Omega
Chapter Friendship Award, Omega Chapter Service Award, Omega Chapter Brother of
the Year Award, Omega Chapter Pledge of the Year Award
<p">
<p">
Did you hold any offices in
your chapter? Secretary,
service vice president and president
<p">
<p">

What is your favorite service project? Each year we helped out at the zoo during a Halloween program they
have. Little kids get dressed up in costumes and go trick-or-treating all over
the zoo. My first year I made the mistake of not wearing a costume, so I was
assigned to dress up as Curious George in the most ridiculous mascot costume
you could possibly imagine. I was bumbling around in this massive monkey suit,
with incredibly limited sight, feeling mildly claustrophobic, with toddlers
hugging me around the ankles. It was an experience, that's for sure.
<p">
<p">

What
is your favorite APO memory? Anything having to do with conferences. There's
nothing better than being able to step outside your own chapter and see APO
working on a bigger scale. I loved exchanging ideas and hearing about what
works for other chapters and seeing the larger impact APO has on the community.
It all adds up to what we like to call the "APO conference high,"
which is an amazing feeling.
<p">

<p">Name
one person who has been an inspiration to you and why. In respect to
APO? Or just in general? What the heck, I'll answer both.
<p">APO - My
chapter had very strong leadership when I pledged, and I became close with the
president in particular. He remains a close friend and was a tremendously
valuable resource when I became active and eventually served as president. He
never tired of giving me the guidance and support I needed, and that gave me a
great deal of confidence.
<p">In general -
My parents, naturally, since they've constantly been supportive and have
encouraged me in all pursuits, even if they didn't totally understand them. But
also a professor I had at Drake named Keith. I took his class on a whim just
for credits, even though it had nothing to do with my major. But he took an
interest in me as a student anyway and genuinely wanted to help guide me and
point me in the right direction, no matter what I needed. He encouraged me to
channel my need to explore and helped me find the courage to make tough
decisions in my last year of school.
<p">
<p">

Why
were you interested in a job as a field representative? Well,
first it’s a paying job with APO. I didn't realize those existed at all. When I
was president of my chapter, I would spend my evenings caught up in APO stuff
thinking "I wish I could do this for my job," and magically that
worked out. It’s also an opportunity for me to continue my involvement with an
organization I love and have been deeply committed to for four years. Plus, I
wasn't warming to the idea of getting some desk job just after graduation. I'm
feeling restless, like I want to go and do and see things, and this will give
me an opportunity for that while meeting other brothers along the way. Also,
toward the end of my APO experience in college, I began to reach out to other
chapters in my section and had the opportunity to lead workshops at
conferences. That introduced me to a whole new aspect of involvement that I
really enjoyed, so I'm excited to be able to continue to do that in a more
official capacity.
<p">
<p">

Do
you have any advice to graduating APO seniors? After
graduation, you'll always be a brother. Just let those magical principles we
love guide you in all aspects of your life and you really can't go wrong.

The Leadership Development Committee has developed a tool to
collect information on Brothers who might be interested in becoming
new presenters for APO LEADS, APO IMPACT, and other workshops.
We are also looking for individuals interested in helping to train
and develop new presenters for various leadership development
programs.
Please send the link below to appropriate regional and sectional
staff and other Brothers (alumni and rising alumni) to fill out to

APO Membership Updates

APO has partnered with
Harris Connect.

With more than 375,000
initiates from over 720 chapters, one could imagine the
difficulties Alpha Phi Omega faces in keeping up with alumni. At
any given time, the Fraternity has updated records for
approximately 50,000 living alumni. Until recently, the Fraternity
has sent mail only to Life Members, since theirs are the addresses
that have been maintained over the years. The majority of members,
who are not Life Members, have not been sent mail because their
addresses are not recorded accurately in the Fraternity’s
database.

APO recently partnered with Harris Connect, a company that works
with hundreds of organizations to gather and maintain data to
build, reinforce and maintain bonds among organization members. In
fact, Harris Connect just completed a project for the National
Eagle Scout Association (NESA) to update the records of every
living Eagle Scout. “We would like to be able to provide a chapter
or an alumni association with an accurate and complete list of
alumni. By having Harris Connect do this work for us and use tools
that are cost prohibitive to the Fraternity, we can update the
Fraternity’s database and improve the accuracy of our
records,” says Robert London, CAE, Executive Director for
APO.

The update will take place
over the next eight to 12 months. Harris Connect staff will work to
obtain accurate records for all living alumni through direct mail
campaigns, phone requests and access to public resources, such as
postal APO Alumni Directory Update: Reconnecting fraternal
connections records. Though this process will take a small amount
of time from our members, it will do a great deal of service to the
Fraternity in our attempt to maintain the most accurate member
database possible.

After verifying directory
information, Harris Connect will give alumni the opportunity to
reconnect with the Fraternity, update their information and share
their personal accounts of Leadership, Friendship and Service with
brothers nationwide who may not otherwise hear these amazing
stories of community service.

“Harris Connect will ask our
members about the community service they are involved with today.
This will give the Fraternity the opportunity to actually see how
effective we are at preparing campus and community leaders, as our
mission calls for. The answers to these questions will be published
in a book called How We Serve,” says
London.

The book will include a
full-color, glossy front section designed by the Fraternity, as
well as a gallery of photos with narratives submitted by members.
How We Serve will not be just another membership
directory. Rather, it will give an in-depth look at our members’
involvement in their communities. Proceeds from the sale of How
We Serve will allow Harris Connect to conduct the directory
research at no expense to the Fraternity. The purchase of the
directory will be marketed to APO members only and not for sale to
the general public.

Both the Fraternity and
Harris Connect are aware of the confidentiality of a project such
as this. Harris Connect, on behalf of the Fraternity,
will secure and hold the copyright of the directory to restrict the
use of the directory solely for communication of a personal nature
between members. This copyright also will make it illegal for
nonmembers to use the directory for any purpose.

Any request from a member to
omit any or all biographical information from the directory will be
honored by Harris Connect. The directory will also be reviewed
against all federal and state “Do Not Call” lists to honor members’
privacy requests. The information submitted to Harris Connect will
not, under any circumstances, be sold or rented to
anyone.

Alumni should expect to be
contacted by Harris Connect in the coming months. Feel free to give
as little or as much information as you want. We look forward
to reconnecting and hearing the community service stories of alumni
who have shaped our image and mission. Rather, it will give
an in-depth look at our members’ involvement in their
communities.

If you have any
other questions, feel free to download a copy of the .pdf
document which contains many <a href=

Are you a Parent, Grandparent,
Friend or Big Brother to an undergraduate of Alpha Phi
Omega? If so, a life membership can be a great gift.
Consider a Lifetime membership in APO for your next birthday,
graduation or Christmas gift. What a great way to invest
while instilling Leadership, Friendship and Service in your
child.

Our cardinal principles of Leadership, Friendship and
Service never leave our members. One way of promoting an
ongoing fraternal bond and dedication to these principles is to
become a Life Member. I extend to you an opportunity
to become or give a Life Member in Alpha Phi
Omega.

Upon receiving an application and the one-time fee of $50 for
undergraduates (up until 1 year after graduation) or $100 (1+ years
after graduation), a handsome lapel pin, certificate and wallet
card will be mailed to you or your special student. Life
Membership also includes a lifetime subscription to the Torch
& Trefoil, Alpha Phi Omega’s quarterly newsletter.

*Life Membership does not relieve the student
of their obligation to pay Annual Active Membership Dues
(AAMD).

How do I become a Life Member?

Life Membership is available to active, alumni and advisory
brothers of the Fraternity. To become a Life Member, a one-time
financial contribution of $50 for undergraduates (up until 1 year
after graduation) or $100 (1+ years after graduation) for alumni is
required. The contribution must be accompanied by the application
(below).

Life Memberships are held and invested by the Endowment Trust.
Life Membership gifts provide a way for both students and alumni to
contribute to the Endowment Trust. Students may purchase Life
Memberships for only $50; alumni Life Memberships are $100. A
lifetime subscription to the Torch and Trefoil is included as a
benefit of Life Membership.
